Camp of Dreams operates programs for underserved 9-15 year olds from all over Chicago, and it is free for all participants. The young people served are those typically overlooked by other programs; Camp of Dreams targets students who are neither the most troubled nor statistical standouts, but those whose promise needs to be bolstered by additional study, practice, and attention. Prospective participants are selected based on an application process involving short essays, letters of reference, and interviews with applicants as well as teachers and other youth workers in Chicago schools and social service organizations.
The project establishes a safe, reliable, and supportive community for kids from different schools, neighborhoods and backgrounds. The relationships built here endure, and their strength fosters personal growth and interpersonal connection for each participant and the community as a whole.
Camp of Dreams served 56 young people during the 2007 summer program and plans to serve at least that many young people during the 2008 summer program. 141 young people have attended Community Days during the 2007-2008 school-year, with an average of 58 per Saturday.
If you have any questions about whether you are eligible to participate in the school-year or summer program, please contact us at: info@campofdreams.org or 312-649-5551.
