The 2017 camping season will feature a bit of a twist on the S.T.E.M. curriculum that many schools and extracurricular programs offer. Camp of Dreams will include an "R" for reading and recreation and an "A" for arts when we begin the summer camp season on July 5. We will be "Camping UpSTREAM."
We will incorporate the other areas of the STEM program: science, technology, engineering, and math. But there is much more to the Camp of Dreams summer experience. Via the classroom, indoor, and outdoor settings, we strive to use our "7Cs" approach of communication, cultural awareness, civic engagement, community-building, college/career preparation, care, and character. And don't forget all the fun that our youngsters will have under the supervision of director Antoine Crenshaw and his staff.
Each morning our Dreamers will meet at the AMC Center at 4421 S. State St. Day camp will run until until July 17 when the Dreamers depart for five nights of overnight camping in Oregon, Ill. at the Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center. Nature hikes, canoeing, archery, fishing, swimming, dance and performing arts, and campfires are just a few of the activities offered during overnight camp. The week culminates with the group camping in tents and cooking dinner over a wood fire. Enjoying a starlit night and eating s'mores caps off an experience that will last a lifetime.
Upon returning to the city, our youngsters will enjoy two more weeks of day camping, building on the experiences and friendships created by their time at overnight camp.
